What Can a Psychological Evaluation Do For You?
A psychological evaluation is a comprehensive process conducted by a licensed psychologist that integrates information from standardized testing, clinical interviews, observations, and input from individuals who know the person well. The goal is to develop a clear understanding of cognitive abilities, learning strengths and challenges, emotional functioning, behavior, and overall development. Psychological evaluations are designed to provide insight and understanding—not labels.
Our evaluations go beyond test scores to offer a thoughtful, integrated perspective of the whole person. By identifying the factors that may be contributing to specific challenges, we help individuals, families, educators, and healthcare providers make informed decisions about support, intervention, and treatment.
Through a combination of evidence-based assessment tools and clinical expertise, we provide meaningful recommendations tailored to each individual's unique needs. Whether working with children, adolescents, adults, or families, our goal is to promote greater self-understanding, guide effective intervention strategies, and support growth, learning, and overall well-being.
The result is practical, actionable information that empowers individuals and those who support them to better understand strengths, address challenges, and move forward with confidence.
Who Can Benefit from a Psychological Evaluation?
A psychological evaluation can provide valuable insight if you or your child are experiencing any of the following:
School difficulties including learning difficulties or a lack of motivation in school
Behavioral problems at home or in school
Learning disabilities including dyslexia and other reading difficulties
Language delays or communication challenges
Social difficulties or challenges with peer relationships
Depression, anxiety, or other mental health concerns
Attention issues or ADHD
Intellectual disabilities affecting learning and daily functioning
Relationship difficulties with family, friends, or peers
Difficulty concentrating or staying focused
Other emotional or behavioral concerns impacting daily life
What Does a Psychological Evaluation Include?
At Wasatch Learning & Wellness, we use a thoughtful and comprehensive evaluation process designed to develop a thorough understanding of each client and their unique concerns. We gather information from multiple sources to gain insight not only into current functioning, but also into the factors that have shaped the individual's development and experiences over time.
This includes exploring developmental milestones, educational and learning history, family relationships and dynamics, social and emotional functioning, occupational experiences, and relevant medical or health factors. By considering the whole person within the context of their life experiences, we are able to provide meaningful insights and personalized recommendations.
Every evaluation includes the following steps to ensure a thorough assessment and practical, actionable results:
Initial Intake Interview
The process begins with an intake with a psychologist to understand your concerns, background, and goals for the evaluation. This helps determine which psychological tests and assessment measures (referred to as the “battery”) will be most helpful for you or your child.
In-Person Psychological Testing
Testing is conducted one-on-one with a psychologist in-person. Depending on the type of evaluation, testing may take place over one or more days to ensure thorough and accurate results and findings.
Interviews and Additional Information Sources
In most cases, and always for minors, we conduct a comprehensive parent interview. In addition, as appropriate, we may gather information from, teachers, outside mental health providers, or other relevant sources. This helps provide a more complete picture of the individual’s functioning across different settings.
Comprehensive Written Report
After testing is completed, you will receive a detailed psychological evaluation report. The report is an integrated document that includes the client’s history, current test results (explained in clear, understandable language), and includes diagnostic impressions (when applicable) and practical recommendations.
Feedback Session
A feedback session is scheduled with the client or parents to review the results of the evaluation. During this meeting, the psychologist explains the findings, answers questions, and discusses recommendations and next steps. A second feedback meeting can be scheduled with minor clients to present relevant findings in an age-appropriate manner, focused on strengths and areas for growth.
Peer Review for Quality Assurance and Professional Learning
We use a team-based peer review process to maintain high standards. Every report is reviewed by another Licensed Psychologist or Psychology Resident before it is finalized and released. This helps us to not only ensure the quality of the report you receive, but to continue to learn from each other.
Optional Collaboration with Schools or Providers
If helpful, we can schedule an additional feedback meeting with a school team, therapist, or other professionals involved in care. This service is available for an hourly fee and can help support coordinated care and implementation of recommendations.
