Our Story

Wasatch Mountains in Sandy, Utah near Wasatch Learning & Wellness

Our journey started with a commitment

Over twenty years ago, Tracine Smoot (our founder and mentor) saw a gap in psychological care. Families were often handed complex reports filled with scores and jargon, but no clear understanding of what to do next. An evaluation, she believed, shouldn't be the end of the road—it should be the beginning of a clear, actionable path forward. Wasatch Learning & Wellness has always aimed to provide a different experience. It was built to be a place where rigorous, science-based evaluations produce not just accurate insights, but a practical roadmap for parents, schools, and therapists to follow – to step forward into real, meaningful change.

What began with a focus on best-in-class evaluations naturally grew into a fully integrated clinical practice. We recognized that the strongest outcomes occurred when evaluators, families, schools, and therapists worked in close collaboration. Today, our integrated model ensures that assessment findings sharpen treatment and therapy brings insight to life, all under one roof.

A message from our owners

Dr. Kara Peterson and Dr. Nicole Stewart, co-owners of Wasatch Learning & Wellness in Sandy, Utah

"My passion has always been in making the insights from an evaluation come to life. True change happens in a warm, collaborative, and therapeutic environment where a child feels seen and understood. We built our practice to ensure that the clinical journey doesn’t end with a report, but continues through compassionate, evidence-based therapy and support.“

- Kara Peterson, PhD

"We are passionate about diagnostic accuracy because we’ve seen the power it has to change a child's trajectory. When a family truly understands the 'why' behind the challenges, they are empowered to find the right solutions. For us, a peer-reviewed evaluation is the ultimate act of clinical care and respect for our clients' journeys.“
